Well done to everyone just for turning up on such a miserable night! You all trained very hard! Its inspiring to see young guys like yourselves out crawling through puddles and climbing up slippery walls when you could be hiding at home with your xbox!

Sonke "Jey nice trainig, nice experience today. Never trained in such heavy rain was bloody hell and after i was freezing extremly. And I hurt myself on the way home :( Got stuck with the scooter in a small hole and fell off. But just hit my knee a bit. Thumb up for all who made it today :)"

Sunday was a hard day of Pk, the sets of 50 armjumps killed but needed. I enjoyed the Wall, its a nice start to a hard day. I tryed to just take photo of hands and feet, didnt work out all that well tho. try again 2moro..Shame PJ and scott keep missing training, PK and Slacklineing. Good work to Sonke, Criss, Newboy, and Marchin with his Polish power! Im going to be out SlackLineing later let me kno if anyone on it..

Big Saiyan shout out to Sönke who has been coming to class for the last few weeks and showing great determination! But tonight he excelled himself when we turned up to teach class and found him sweeping the whole of Black square of glass and rubbish. This level of care for our training areas shows such respect and sets an example to us all!

Elephant and Castle 2010

Over the weekend the Saiyans team went to Off The Wall London jam and had an amazing time, meeting old friends and new. All of the Saiyan class worked well and trained hard as well as hiting some crazy spots!!

"Yesterday's Off The Wall London jam was a cracker, with a veritable horde of practitioners moving on, over, under and around the Elephant and Castle estate for the entire day despite the chilly conditions. Great to see so many people out for the first jam of 2010, and a pleasure to have the Saiyans down to join the fun. Thanks to everyone who came down and trained, we had a blast! "The first of the free London jams, known as Off The Wall, will occur this month on the last Sunday as always - 31st January - and will be held at the Elephant and Castle training area. The jam kicks off outside Elephant and Castle tube station, meeting outside the Shopping Centre exit before heading down to the location. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
The Saiyan team are back from the little Xmas break and are ready to take on the obstacles of 2010!! (Not for are Saiyan Bro Daffy tho, hes stuck in Ireland coz of snow)

First up its been crazy snowing over the past weeks making it very hard to PK or just train, However many of you have been working hard to push through the cold and ice and unlock a side you didn't know you had..The SnowSaiyan is a rare creature indeed.

Secondly we just cant miss out on PK-Snow ball fight part 2!! Head to Broadfields this weekend, It all starts around 12pm at BlackSquare then we will make our way to the fields for miles of fresh snow!!!! Got some snow beef to settle??

Lastly the Parkour Classes will start next week, same time and place, hope to see all of the team then. (More class info soon)

Off the Wall.

This Sunday the Parkour Generations 'Off the Wall' open jam will be held at Elephant and Castle from 12.30pm. We meet outside the Elephant and Castle tube station (shopping centre exit) and then move on to the local estate. For all those who are unfamiliar with our event, the last Sunday of the month always hosts a completely free and open get-together of all traceurs and traceuses to train, have fun and share tips. Everyone is welcome, regardless of whether you are an absolute beginner or highly trained global veteran superstar... Some of the Parkour Generations team will also be on hand to help anyone that wants it. See you Sunday!

Last week we had the Lincs Parkour team down for a very rushed visit, Dale, Mike aka Buffy the cake slayer, Jonny aka Fez, Stu Palmer and the man who made the road trip happen, Liam "The Hulk" Houlden.
I was in the Saiyan HQs fields training on the Slackline in the dark when in the corner of my eye i spotted a strange glow off in the distances. I hoped off my line and went to investigate in the pitch black and as I got closer I could just about make out 5 people.. it was the S.B.C with a pumpkin that had the Saiyan man carved out!!!
They where only down for 3 days but we packed them with training at the Black square, Atlas, back of Edgware and going out parting in town. oh and the £5 bucket of mutant chicken with extra bones.
It was a mad sleep deprived few days but a lot of random fun, just like every time the SBC and Saiyans get together.
(Don't know if we got any pics or vids)

*For those that don't know...
The SBC are a small team from right hear in Nort London just up the road from the Saiyan HQ.
Headed by Dale Annous, the team featured in the 2007 PKVM along side the SaiyanClan. However the SBC evoulved into Lincs parkour when Dale moved to the uni of lincoln in 2005.
Since then the Lincs pk team have grown in size and influence, helping to run classes and big events all over England. They continue work hard to help Le Parkour grow and we wish them all the best.*

Deech and Lino

Big Love to our brothers Leech and Dino, who have just met up to train together in Vienna. We first met these 2 on our first stop on the "Art of Movement" tour at Essen in Germany in 2007. As many of you know we have had many adventures with Leech, such as the "Just a Click" charity event in London, which coincided with the launch of Zeitgeist Addendum premiere. Dino is a member of the European collective of Traceurs, Parkour ONE. Some of you might not know that Dino has a role in the new Banlieue 13: Ultimatum, so keep an eye out for him. Hope to see both of you guys again soon, train hard, and will we see another one of Leech's famous videos? (Watch out Dino!)

Twio-X and Flow

A couple of Weekends back we had some good friends staying from the continent. We had Alex, Ronny, Runa, Stefan and Tilo from Twio-X in Leipzig, Germany. Alex and Moses go way back to the "PAWA.de" days, but we first met them when we were teaching at the playstation workshops last year in Germany and Austria. We also had our good man Flow, who rode his bike all the way from Vienna in his home country of Austria, through various different parts of Europe, including Lisses, sleeping where nature would have him. Luckily we had a bit of space, save him sleeping in the Saiyan garden. :P
Packing all these guests into our humble abodes was no easy feat! (Thanks again to the Saiyan mums for the patience.)

We started saturday up in Broadfizzle for a light warm up in Black Square where we met up with our students Elliot, Mitch and PJ and also Doug from Canterbury, (or Dak, if u ask Flo) who had been housing Flo since his two wheeled arrival in this country. We jumped on the train down to Waterloo, a train ride that felt a lot shorter than usual due to a rudamentary paper ball and Tilo and Flo's encyclopaedic ability to recall Jukebox hits of the past few decades! Down at imax we crossed over with some of the large numbers gathered for the 3run family jam. The place was rammed so we decided to get on a bit of slacklining between the two trees while the euros tackled the crowd to get a little blue wall action. We spent the day trying to hit as many of the close spots as we could like OXO and BFI, as the guys only had a short time in LDN.

Sunday morning definitely got off to a slower start but i've always felt thats what Sundays are there for. We were joined again by Doug who set up camp locally, and our students Mitch, PJ and Scott. We eventually managed to get on a train bound for Tooting, another journey that would have been a lot longer without handball and karaoke! We went down to Earlsfield to meet with PKGen's Tracey, Dan and Brian and the girls at their monthy girl jam. Runa spends all her time training with guys, and although this may have its advantages I'm sure she enjoyed training with the girls. We spent the afternoon training in the estate and in the local kids park. We couldnt have picked a better day to go, as Tracey organised an after training bbq in the park where we all relaxed, chatted and cooked things that i thought had no place on a bbq. one being haloumi cheese, which was really good, the other was banana.....which the jury are still out on.

Although their stay was short, the weekend was really fun! We had a great time training and a good laugh when we wernt. Thanks to Alex, Flo, Ronny, Runa, Stefan and Tilo for being such great guests, you are all welcome back anytime! Thanks to Tracey, Dan, Brian and all the girls at Earlsfield. Also big shout to Fez and Adam down on Saturday from the Lincoln Manner!!

just a small post from japan to let you know my parkour trip is going very well, met alot of people that love pk and realy dig the saiyan vibe!! im in kyoto at the mo then heading back up to tokyo next day or 2. im in love with japn, its the best place iv ever been for pk and the people are super cool, i get no shit jumping round just alot of love from cops lol anyway im dead and am off 2 eat now will post a fat right-up asap. love and miss all my saiyans.

Unfortunately this year the Trace team will not be hosting a gathering in the peaks... or anywhere. The decision was hard to make but due to time constraints, teaching priorities, overseas work and so on we can't dedicate time to the vast organisation it takes to get 200+ people safely to the peaks. We hope for a gathering next year, fingers crossed

A class Update

Over the past few months we’ve been working with a team of young, energetic and enthusiastic traceurs to set up small classes with big results! The class, which is made up of 8 boys and 2 girls, covers the basics of warm-ups/ warm downs, mobility, fitness, conditioning and of course parkour. We start with a light run into run with jump ups/downs/sideways/backwards and over & under obstacles, insisting on small obstacles with light impact to raise CV. Then onto mobility covering all major joints, paying extra attention to wrists and knees. Progressing to a full-body stretch session, we name and talk about muscles being used and the roles they play. Then conditioning, we have a set which starts with our hands on the ground, feet up on hip-height wall and combines locks and holds/push-ups/one-arm holds/forearm holds/backwards holds/dips/ 3 stage wall push-ups and so on.Then the fun stuff… Because the classes are a mixed bunch, we usually split the class based on age as our youngest is 8 and oldest 28! We’ve worked on the fundamentals of parkour e.g. jumps/lands/rolls/small volts/balance and foot placement. More recently we have moved on to arm jumps/wall runs and volts with speed. Also we have started to combine movements in “Runs” giving the students a chance to apply what they have learnt over the past few months. We always finish class with “Games” – run outs or had, we even have people from the local area who don’t attend the classes begging to join in the action! The majority of the students are new to parkour, but show a real passion for it, they are always training before and after class, weekends and school holidays. We’ve had so much fun with them and hope it continues over the summer and into next year.
Other highlights have been wicked music via The Boombox, giant crash mat day, kung-fu with Jim aka ‘Par-fu’, PK Easter egg hunt day (we hid Cadbury’s crème eggs all over The Black Square, one of our training locations). Thanks also to good friends Christian, Alex, Ross, ‘Backwards’ Elliott (click here to find out why we call him that), ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Bobby and everyone else who has come along to support the class.

First Saiyan Under 16 Gathering

On Sunday the 1st March we had a successful turnout at the Saiyans' first under 16 session held in the infamous GP. We had a good day working on some balance and training exercises and rounded off with a mega game of "Off the floor had" on The Monster Maze. All the guys who came along showed great spirit and determination and we hope to see you all next Sunday!

Linz to London

Hey hey, more Saiyan family coming to stay. Our good friends Bernard and Alex are flying over in February for a week of training. They both live in Linz, a small area in Austria that's an absolute gem for Parkour. We were lucky enough to to get a chance to visit them there last June and would seriously recommend anyone visiting Austria to take a trip there. They regularly practise with Moses in Salzburg and with Leech, Matty, Shorni and all the guys in Vienna.

During the new years period we have a fellow Saiyan family member joining us from Austria. Karin will be coming over for week from 27 Dec to 2 Jan. She’s been training over in Austria and I know she can’t wait to be back in London so it will be a brilliant chance to get out and train with her (since it’s been a while) and I’m sure she’d appreciate having some people around to train with and see some old and possibly meet some new faces. This weekend Blake, Cable, Daffy, Dale, Stuart palmer, Jim key, Mojo, Mike, and Leech (all the way from Austria) will be running a small Parkour workshop at Who gives a click? The event aims to raise money and awareness for local charities involved on the day, unite local communities and fulfil Givingaclick's goal of creating an online community for charity minded people.
The event will also see the UK premier of "Zeitgeist Addendum", directed by Peter Joseph, followed by a Question and Answer session with the director himself. On Sunday 3rd August I attended my first parkour girl jam held by some of the members of Parkour Generations team in Kilburn. Being a bit of a newbie to the parkour world, it was a great chance to meet and train with other girl traceurs.
Soon after meeting up with everyone the heavens opened, making it a cold and very wet session but everyone soldiered on in the pouring rain. I enjoyed having the other girls there to train with, it was a different experience than training with guys.
A big thanks to Tracey, Thomas & Dan for the chance to come along and their help on the day. I had a brilliant time with the ladies … see you all at the next jam!

23.06.08 Cable and Blake will be traveling to Salzburg, Austria to meet Mogli [ Austrian Parkour Association ] and to Participate at the most renowned festivals for culture, movement and dance in the world.

The performance will be live in Salzburg on the 04th and 05th July 08 both at 5 and 7pm at the "Museum der Moderne" [ uk: Museum of the modern ].

We will be loking forward to it.

On Friday (14th)Lukas and Shao from German based Team Nemo are flying over to visit the vibrant UK Parkour scene and train with as many Traceurs as they can. They will be joined by another team member, Marvin, on the 19th and they be here to the 23rd. These guys really excited to see all the popular spots so if anyone is around, especially during the week give us an email or call.

We are heading down to Southbank with them on Sunday, so if anyone is about, we'll see you there.

We met the team in Essen, Germany over the summer, and we could tell straight away these guys were very dedicated and had a good Parkour spirit. So we invited them over to London and we hope they will leave a little wiser, stronger and tired from the experience.

A good friend of the Saiyans, Elliot recently left all of us Londeners behind for an adventure in Finland. He's only been gone a couple of months and he's already writen a thought provoking insight into his life, along with an awesomly arty video.

"As a race we no longer live in a kill or be killed world, where other humans or animals are an immediate threat to our survival (although some people may have you believe that). It is no longer only the strong who survive, and this is one reason why my motivations for training are not for the sole purpose of escape."

Weekend in Lincoln

We've had a couple of busy weekends recently and one of which was a trip to Lincoln to see Dale, old skool member of the Saiyan family; and the ever-growing Lincs Parkour community. It turns out Lincoln is somewhere near Mordor, so it took us forever to get there, arriving just before midnight Friday. We headed back to Dale's for a healthy meal and a good nights sleep ;-)
On Saturday got up early for a greasy breakfast, uni style, with Jim and Stu (pictured left), followed by a tour of the small but beautiful town of Lincoln, complete with its quirky back alleys and its apparent lack of adults! We then headed to the main meeting place of the local traceurs and were introduced to some new faces as well as some we knew from the Trace Gathering. It was cool to meet a really tight community, who trained so well together and all help and encourage each other. We were taken to some really varied locations for Parkour including some scaffolding with some really cool angles, where some of the guys spent time showing us their swinging dismounts, brilliant stuff. We then came to a spot where there was a progressively growing rail precision which was excellent for finding your limits. Unfortunately the ordinarily focused Jim suffered a lapse of concentration and his foot landed short of the rail, shinning himself silly. Which he didn't seem to notice until he pulled up his trouser leg unveiling thick blood pouring into his white sock!! Instantly everyone gathered to help with people removing wristbands as make-shift bandages and helping him stop the bleeding. Its good to know if you fall in Lincoln, the guys have got your back. In Jim's credit though, he didn't complain a bit.
There was a lot to see so moved quickly to the playground in the arboretum. On route we had to cat crawl backwards up a couple of flights of stairs, then straight into a challenging climb especially as everything was slippery. Once we reached the top we headed into "Banksy playground", so named for its juxtaposition of children at play with the overbearing reminder that Big Brother, even in Lincoln, is watching. There were a few challenges we set each other but one stood out as our fave; The Silent landing challenge! The video below is pretty self explanatory, turn up your sound for this one...

On Sunday we woke up fairly late in the day due to a tour of Lincoln's nightlife that extended into the wee hours of the morning. With a coach to catch that afternoon we grabbed some grub and followed Stu's lead to a couple of his favorite spots. One of which was the breathtaking rooftop run which had so many possible opportunities for movement and had an eye-popping roof gap which looked just perfect. The picture doesn't do it justice, but the surrounds and the height made it very challenging however it felt attainable and it drove us crazy that there was a huge puddle right in the landing spot. Deeply disappointed that we didn't get a chance to seriously contemplate it, but next time...
It wouldn't be a Saiyan trip with the fuzz popping up, on our way down we realised police had been called and had surrounded the building. They were a little aggravated at first, but once we explained what we we're doing, and were not daylight robbers, they changed their tune and showed quite an interest in Parkour.

All in all a fantastic break away from the big city, with an excellent community of traceurs, that for us was reminiscent of the early days at Liverpool street.

The awesome copy-cat girl with the ability to learn anything she sees using muscle memory completes some nice simple moves. She does a quick reverse vault to keep on running, and does a tic-tac against the wall whilst vaulting the rail one hand. Really nothing flashy - but her aim was not escape in this instance, it was breaking and entering. Glad to see no flips or unnecessary movements, but how might this demonstration affect us as the practitioners? Could this reflect badly? Well hopefully it wont!

The only question that remains is.. Who was the dude performing the parkour?

Over the last year or so Mike has been training with us as much as he can, giving his weekends up as well as one mid week training night. Hes worked hard and shown a great attitude both for Parkour and Saiyan, and so at this point we welcome him into are little family.

Channel 4 Shoot

Sorry to all who haven't heard from us recently, it has been a little quiet on the blog. Anyway here's a short update on one of the projects we've been working on recently.

On Wednesday 15th of August we did some filming work with Parkour Coaching in which we shot some innovative ident material with Channel 4 for The Discovery Channel in London. What was cool was that we were using POV cameras that allow the viewer to see exactly what the traceur sees as he or she moves.

Blake - What this meant was me having a camera attatched to a helmet on my head with a wire leading to a runner with a 20kg vcr on his back (I'm sure its more hi tech), then a wire leading to the director running along with a portable monitor. I then had to run while doing very simple parkour movements and try and capture all the other guys in the shot, without tripping over the wires or getting the crew in shot. Sounds mental but really quite fun. Keep your eyes peeled for some pk action on the Discovery channel in October!!

It was a year ago today that we decided to set up this quaint little blog we call the SaiyanGarden. It was our good friend Dale who encouraged us to get a blog saying "Think, in a year from now you can look back and so how far you have come." But its been more than that, its allowed us to keep up with Mogli's events in Austria, and its given us a place to have a moan without it being moderated. Its also meant we have kept in touch with all our good traceur friends around the country and the world and kept us just about visible on the parkour radar. lol
Anyway hopefully this next year we'll post a little more. If anyone wants to see what we've been ranting on about this year past; it's all there in the archives.

Parkour Coaching with the Yamakasi

It all kicked off on Sunday the 13th May in Kilburn at St Augustine's School, with the Parkour Coaching Seminar Hosted by Forrest, Dan and Stephane. It was the first time we've been able to jump on a bus straight from Edgware to practise with some of the top traceurs from France and the UK. On the way to the event, we met up with a good friend of ours, Thomas who was strolling along with Dan, Stephane, Kazuma, Laurent, Yann and also Seb Goudot and Cisco who we hadn't seen since our adventure to Lisses. When we arrived at the school we we're surrounded by familiar faces including The TCT, Blane, DC, The Brads from WWJ, Jason, Liv, and Bachelerius.
The day was packed with conditioning and drills which judging by everyones faces and the volume of sweat on the floor, was as killer for everyone as it was for us. Some of the highlights of the day were: Bobby and Kazuma sliding backwards while doing the splits under a gym horse, which was well fuckin cool; the circuit which consisted of underbars through the various levels of apparatus which we hadn't used since school days. Having some one on one coaching from Yann Hnautra and getting some insight into how he and the others train was really inspiring, but it was clear that they we're more accustomed to outdoor training, as Seb said there are limits to indoor practise.
The cool down at the end was tougher than the warm up, which gave us a sneaky suspicion that Forrest and Dan were intent on pushing everyone to their limits. All in all a brilliant day, well worth the bus fare lol.

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past year or so, The name Jason Matten needs no introduction. He's responsible for the series of parkour mini documentaries known as PKVM, and his next project is finally ready!

Trace clothing is an ambitious new line of Parkour clothing which provides a well needed alternative to other dominating freerunning brand$. What sets Trace apart is an emphasis on the positive promotion of Parkour and is not just plastered with meaningless symbols of over-glorified companies. When Jason first approached us, we were a little sceptical as we weren't very keen to get involved with a brand again. But what sold it to us was Jason's ideas which stretched beyond the clothing line, in actually wanting to help others. Also having the several like-minded traceurs from across the UK who we have a great deal of respect for. Obviously wearing Trace clothing is not going to make you run faster or jump higher, it isnt going to make you a better traceur, but it will make you look cool. lol but seriously some of these designs are fantastic and as the motto says, they are made "For Traceurs By Traceurs". At this stage the prices are no higher than other brands and obviously they are not essential but if you got a spare bit of dough and want some kick-ass new threads its definitely worth a look.

One of the first projects that extends beyond the clothing range is the TRACEUR gathering '07. This is a 3 day Parkour/Camping/all out mad adventure event from the 31st July to the 2nd August. It will see more that 150 traceurs camping at the field head campside in Edale, training and having a laugh in the beautiful natural environments of the peak district.
Trace reps Jin, Owen, Blane, Dave, Danny, Brad, and ourselves will all be present and leading the training in groups, the evening activities/conditioning and helping out where they can aswell as training and having a good time ourselves. There should also be a couple of special guests too.

All in all Trace is something that is here to stay, there is nothing good about a monopoly and Trace is just one player on this fast expanding board. More good things to come...

A French soldier and philosopher of physical culture. He was inspired by the athletic qualities of natives he encountered while serving in the French Navy in Africa. He developed a philosophy of physical culture from his observations called the Natural Method. Part of that philosophy had an emphasis on training by obstacle courses. These obstacle courses, known as Parcours Du Combattant, have become part of military training systems throughout the world. Part of Hebert's philosophy was that physical training should strengthen one’s moral fabric. His motto was "Être fort pour être utile," be strong to be useful. This is an important foundation of parkour philosophy.

The FreeRunning game is inevitable...
We at the Garden still have our contracts for this projects that we hoped would not see the light of day.
From the start it was wrong, taking the Tony hawks approach, it came across old and dated, and as over the top as a Lilly Savage hair-do.
And by having the likes of EZ in it was just laughable!!

Ubisoft signs UK deal with Reef Entertainment to distribute Free Running
Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, have announced a UK sales and distribution deal with Reef Entertainment to release Free Running, a game based on the new and exciting sport of the same name, on the PlayStation® 2 and PlayStation® Portable (PSPTM) consoles in March 2007.

I think everyone knows how we feel about this game, but its unstoppable at this point. Urbanfreeflow have worked hard on this little investment over the past 2years or so and will boost them onto a untapped Freeruning market. Sounds good right?

Dont be conned by flash adds and unlockable videos, this whole project is one big promotion for the power mad Urbanfreeflow. What could have been a opportunity to push Le-parkour the lazy gamer market has instead been used as a tool for the likes of adidas to sell more crap!
The thing thats gets us is we really want to play a good Le-Parkour game, with D.Belle and other top guys..but we are all stuck with this!

Jump Lincoln Video

Good friend of the Saiyans, Dale has been involved in the Lincoln Parkour scene since he left the big city for higher education. Since then he has generated a lot of interest from councils, schools and has set up workshops and classes, raising the profile of Parkour in the area. Despite almost being served with an ASBO and being hounded by local bobbys, his efforts havn't gone unnoticed and have had a mini documentary made about his students and the Lincs Parkour scene.
As the video shows there is some good potiential emerging from this quiet leafy town, and this definately ain't the last we'll hear from Dale aka Mr Tea!

Assassins creed is a fantastic new game coming out on the 360 and PS3 in 2007. Its coming from Ubisoft, the people behind the Prince of Persia series. The game focuses around an assassin who's mission it is to take out various historical figures. The most appealing part of this game for us is the
free roaming aspect, in which you can use "Parkour" to scale buildings, wall run, arm jump, tic tac, gap jump and precisions with amazing fluidity, that knocks any "freerunning" game out the water. We havent played it ourselves but from what we've seen it looks like an amazing must-have for all traceurs! Lol I swear we havnt been payed to endorse this game it just looks that damn good. Went along to our local cinema to see our man Sebastien's big screen debut in Casino Royale. And we didn't have to wait long to see a 30ft Seb head bearing down on us. We we're right near the front so he looked massive for a little guy! None of us realised quite how involved Seb's character, Mollaka, would be and we're so excited to see a full 10 mins of Bond vs Parkour. It had an interesting start with Seb cheering on a fight with a snake and a ferret or something, quicky realised he's been spotted by MI6 and wastes no time to hot tail it out of there into a conviently obstacle packed building site, bring on the pk! Arm jumps, tic tacs, some serious buildering and some mad gaps. One of the coolest pk scenes was when Seb jumps from one floor of a building, onto a moving lift then onto the next floor leaving Bond shaken. But there's no out witting 007, who although taken some serious drops and bashes, did his best to keep up with Seb's lightning speed. But when you're getting chased by a man with a licence to kill, its only a matter of time before you're numbers up, even when you're blatently biting moves from District 13 to get away. (You'll know it when you see it). All in all it's a fantastic achievement for Le Parkour in general, Bond movies attract massive audiences accross the globe and Parkour will be forever immortalised in the bond mythology. Den denen dern den, denden, den denen dern den denden deneeeeeeeeeern den dern der. lol

Osram Milan 2006 - Pics and Vids

The event was blast, completely booked out with 160 Traceurs from all over the world.

An old empty warehouse was completely converted into a Parkour paradise. This time the obstacles consisted of a scaffolding infrastructure dressed with hard wood, sturdy and safe for Traceurs at all skill levels to use. Osram provided an unlimited supply of lighting ideas, bringing a really dramatic atmosphere to the place. The graffiti artists added the final touch and the DJ injected some andrenaline pumping music ensuring a high spirited atmosphere. All obstacles were then checked by Parkour trainers to ensure for safety and we we’re ready to go.

The event was packed with a sweet show and non stop work shops. It all started with some warming up, mobilization of joints, stretches and Parkour oriented strength training to get the pulses raised and get everyone ready for a the day ahead. Throughout the day people where really pushing their levels, sharing ideas and inspiration and coming up with some really creative movements. The day finished up with a nice free session where everyone squeezed that last bit of energy out, if they had any left.

A mellow Saturday

Last Saturday I met up with Cable, Max and Mike in our local area and headed down to the park for a quiet spot to practise balance. We hid our bags in a tree and headed to a pond-side rail. It was a wooden beam about a foot and a half high, over 100m long with a path on one side and nettles, thorns, rough ground, pond water and various wildlife on the other. It’s a great rail to practise on because you can’t go more than 10 steps without the rails changing direction, height, becoming wobbly, slanting or having to go over, under or round overhanging shrubbery. At one point you have to leap into a tree climb round it then swing back to the rail. We made it challenging for max by always keeping on his heels and trying to distract him but this in turn meant we would often have to stop suddenly and hang back while he dealt with the off-puts. We got to the end and we’re happy to move on, but Cable kept bugging us to do it again in reverse. For once Mike was glad to be sitting out.

Once everyone had limbered up we convinced Cable to get off the rail by enticing him with an even more challenging one. This was a bloody über rail: Long, high, sloping, bent and slippery, a right bastard of a rail! Now I’ve been working on my balance a lot recently but this really was a challenge. Cable happily shot off along the rail while I couldn’t make it more than a few metres. Max just tackled the challenge of getting onto a rail just under chest height without anything to help balance. After about 30 minutes or so despite balancing a lot further, I had begun to dislike the rail that kept maliciously chucking me off. Cable of course balanced the whole thing, but nobody saw, so it don’t count hahaha.

So like big kids we headed to the playground. It’s amazing how much time passes when working on seemingly small obstacles. But it’s often the small things that allow you to really understand how your body works and where you need to build strength. It also allows you to work on the more complex and technical side of Parkour that I love. We ended up spending the rest of the day there. All in all a small but essential day of practise for everyone.

Student Down

A couple of weeks back Cable was out practising with Mike and Max. They we’re working on a follow the leader style run with Cable taking the lead through balancing, small precisions, wallruns and vaults. It was all going smoothly max and mike we’re keeping up happily when disaster struck. Mike was balancing on a thick but rounded rail, when his foot slipped catching his other leg and sending him face first towards the merciless concrete below. Landing chest/chin first with an almighty crashing sound set Cable and max running over to see a winded and blooded Mike looking dazed. After a few frantic minutes he caught his breath and composure and decided it might be a good time to go home insisting that Max and Cable stay and practise, but as you can imagine that put an end to the day. A couple of days later he called us and only then did we find out the severity of the fall. An X-ray revealed he had fractured his jaw and needed it wired and would be out for at least six weeks!! Despite that he hasn’t lost enthusiasm and still comes out, and often has to be reminded of his injury to keep him from training. This is a big reminder to anyone that all it takes is a moment of distraction to have serious consequences. Students please always keep this in mind, accidents happen! Keep you updated. The last two weeks...

The last two weeks have been great, the sun’s been out and so have I! I really thought the summer had gone but the powers that be gave us two more amazing weeks, that topped the mid 20s (in September!) It gave me plenty of opportunity to work on my balancing, going over all my old rails, ropes and rooftop ledges with a bit more confidence, speed and control. I’m at the stage now where I can comfortably jump between single file rails. Also I can now hold my self for so far up to 30 minutes without dropping for rest (I’m aiming for a full 60 minutes).

Why all the balance? Like I said back in my uf days, balance is key. The better I get at it, the more I can introduce it to my everyday runs, for example, SDC to precision (or monkey precision for all you old school cats) becomes a lot easier because I can catch my balance a lot quicker or in some cases an instant before I actually land. My overall goal is to be able to do some tight rope walking…but I will never try this!

Also over the two weeks there has been a huge surge of interest from the local kids, some as young as 8 and their concerned but curious parents. It seems everybody in the saiyanhood wants to know what Parkour’s all about and how to get started. So never missing an opportunity to promote our beloved Parkour, I’ve been demonstrating the very basics to a very young crowd almost every day now and it’s very rewarding. The thing about kids, they see things differently often finding near impossible obstacles and asking “Can you do that one?” Their perception of difficult is different to our own, which is something I finding both inspiring and refreshing. We play a lot of follow the leader which is a perfect opportunity for me to guide the young crowd over small rails, low jumps and little precisions. I want them to get a feel for the real Parkour, as in obstacle after obstacle after obstacle as opposed to single movements. In my view, the quicker they get into this routine, the better for their possible future as a tracer. Today I left the kids with a chalked line and asked them to jump as far they could and mark where they landed with their initials. Tomorrow I’m planning on going back to see how the kids got on, let’s just hope it don’t rain.

That was two weeks.

At the beginning of the summer, SaiyanClan gave into demand and started teaching small classes to beginner tracers around the local area of North London. A group of potential tracers, “free runners”, and fad chasers showed up to our open days, however the flips, kicks and general attitude did them no favours and the group was quickly cut down. The ones remaining were then put through a series of test, both mental and physical to determine who had what it takes, and to let them know what to expect for the summer that ahead. These ranged from dealing with heights to endurance training. The results left us with 5 young dudes all with a respectful view of le Parkour and an understanding of what it would take to become tracer. The 5 that survived had shown determination, courage, focus and most importantly, passion. These kids are in love with Parkour. When most of their friends conjoined to a ps2 pad, they are out practising every chance that they get. Often they would fall but seldom would they complain, instead learning from their mistakes and quoting Belle’s “The best thing about falling down is getting back up again!”

All five guys levels are improving by the day but like most of us, still have a long way to go... watch this space!

The woman then asked if it could be repeated and then answered Park Life. hahaha

Mogli...Back in Black!!!

For the first time in two years all four Saiyans have been in the same place at the same time. Our man Mogli has been back in the LDN with a whole lotta new Austrian tricks up his sleeve. No sooner had he touched down, we bundled him and his girl "Karin" into a car bound for Broadfizzle, Edgware. We gave him a minute or two to drop his stuff off and get his pk shoes on before chucking him in a the deep end for a massive gathering of the "Edgware collective".
All of our dudes (both tracer and civilian) along with Dale and Cecil of SBC, down especially from uni, our students and every local kid with any interest in Parkour, came along to welcome home the fourth Saiyan!

After some well deserved rest we headed down to our favourite park to do a little tree practise or so we thought until Mo decided to raise the bar and unleashed some awesome tree combinations that left the rest of us at ground level scratching our heads. He demolished all the challenges we set him and even did some we'd been puzzling over for ages. This got the rest of us trying our hardest to save our pride and by the end of the day we we're tearing the trees up along with our hands just trying to keep up. Mo's time in leafy Salzburg has definitely paid off!

No Saiyan visit to LDN would be complete without heading to GP Hood, a favourite spot of ours and home to Daffy. This was a good chance to show Mogli all the spots we'd found since
he'd left. After working on a few runs we realised we had lost Karin in the ghetto! lol. We climbed up to vantage point to see her attracting a lot of attention from the locals, so we sent Moz to the rescue and retreated to a chick friendly area. lol

Of course we took a trip down memory lane as we headed up to Waterloo, a place we hadn't been in at least a couple of months and Mogli hadn’t been to in years. It was quite a sour surprise for the EuroSaiyan who hadn't seen the deconstruction of such an iconic spot for us, however after some reminiscing we headed over to Jubilee gardens to meet our man Jason of SinClan, who is now a giant!! (Seriously the man has beefed up). We then spent the day doing a lot of power training and trying to stealth around security. The days highlights we're Jason's strength training techniques, Cable's rope balancing in the playground, Mogli's massive cat (arm jump) from a wall to a tree and back, and Blue's Lee Ryan coming over to us with his super hot girl to tell us how much he loved parkour, or "that jumping thing" as he put it. And shook Blake and Daffy's hand for a massive monkey (sdc) to precision. He then spent a while watching us train. I think we may see some Parkour in his next ballad video.

On the complete flip side of the coin, we took a well deserved rest from Practise and headed into central for a night of mischief...lol nuff said!!

The two weeks flew by and it was the last day before we knew it. Everyone knew this was the last time all four of us would practise together for a while so everyone wanted to push and challenge each other. We realised one Saiyans' strength is another’s' weakness which encouraged us to work on aspects of Parkour we might otherwise neglect. The day kicked off in Broadfizzy when Mogli spotted a cool run that started at ground level, up onto a wall, a cat (arm jump) into a tree then as quickly as you can through the tree before the Saiyan behind squashed you, and then a descent down to ground level. This got everyone fired up so by the time we hit the town Daffy found some cool precisions and a sweet gap jump. We only had enough time to do a few underbars and pull-throughs and some other bar related techniques that don't need a name, when London's finest turned up to catch some "daytime burglars". We we're expecting the usual authoritarian over zealous approach but it turned out they we're quite understanding and some what fans of Parkour and actually stuck around for a bit to pick up some pursuit tactics, lol. After they left Moses brought out the big guns and nailed a jump he'd had his eye on all week. It was a near level to level roof gap from a raised step and over a rail just before you landed. It's the kind of jump tracers dream about, you have to give it your full commitment, but once you know have the height to clear the rail, it's a smooth flight. It took a while for the rest of us to gather the courage to step up, but once we did, we worked into a sweet run and gave Daffy the drive to do a big, awkward precision onto a tiny landing space. All in all a fucking excellent day made all the better by the excited squeal Cable made while flying over the über gap. :D

As with all good things, Mogli's trip had to come to an end so reluctantly, with cut hands and swollen feet we rolled back home to spend the last night with the Saiyan extended family for a lazy, hazy night on the hill. ;-)

Mogli is now back in Austria recovering for an intense two weeks touring round Germany with the PAWA.de team. Good luck to them all and we'll keep you updated.
